Statement: A hearty welcome to Wels!
As I see it the value of the UAC, that this year will again have about 100 participating teams from numerous countries, is not only on the sporting front. Due to this multicultural meeting of people from different walks of life and their social positions as well as different cultural backgrounds and colour get to know and understand each other. Here sport has one of its founding and most important functions in its most exemplary form, which of course is international understanding in its broadest form.
This in my opinion is as important as the sportive success, which of course in such an event is the centre of attention for the players, coaches and officials.
I want to thank Johann Oberndorfer, the initiator of this great footballing event, as well as his team, who this year yet again took on the strenuous organisational work for the UAC. Large international events like this one need a great deal of working-hours, most of them unpaid, so that everything can run smoothly.
I want to thank all the young participants as well as their coaches and officials. I wish all of you a pleasant stay and I hope that all of you have enough time to see something of Wels and can take a few impressions of our town back home.
I wish the UAC 2008 to be free of any accidents and that it should be held in a fair and friendly manner so that all the participants will have fond memories of their time in Wels.
